  • This Project for Odd Duck Bookstore in Elma, WA was really fun for me, especially because it began when I came into the store as a customer.

While chatting with the owner as he rang up a book I was buying, I learned that he was looking for ways to bring more customers into his quirky store.

I suggested that, in this digital age, he needed to build an online presence and could start by making an cost-friendly investment in a simple website and refreshing the business’s out-of-date Facebook page.

He admitted that he wasn’t very tech-savvy and didn’t know where to start, so I shared some basic information about how he could purchase his domain and the average cost and simplicity of Squarespace websites.

He asked for my help and hired me on the spot! I continue to update his page regularly and advise him on other ways he can grow his business.

    • Researched and reported the available options and costs for his business’s domain, and helped him choose and purchase the domain name

    • Created a brand guide with him, using his personality, the store’s atmosphere, and the business logo to inspire themes and styles

    • Drafted a simple and easy to navigate Squarespace website, with photos, news, merchandise highlights, and information about the business. This included creating and word-smithing all text on the site

    • Performed a first-round review of the drafted site with him and made adjustments in response to his feedback and new ideas

    • Performed a second-round review of the drafted site with him and received final approval

    • Published the website and watched his business grow!

    • I also assisted him in updating his business information on Google and Google Maps, creating Yelp and Nextdoor pages, and getting the business’s Facebook page refreshed and kept current

  • Odd Duck Books has experienced an increase in business and sales, especially from folks passing through the small town of Elma as they travel between Ocean Shores, Olympia, and Grand Mound

The website receives views daily! Odd Duck Books now shows up first in Google search results for ‘bookstores near Elma, WA,’ and in the top 10 for ‘bookstores near Aberdeen’

A desktop computer on a wooden desk shows a webpage and a document open on the screen; the document appears to be a policy document from the California In-Home Supportive Services Consumer Alliance in the process of being edited.
  • I worked with the California In-Home Supportive Services Consumer Alliance (CICA) to update, modernize, and clarify their organization’s bylaws.

The original bylaws hadn’t been updated in over a decade, were outdated, and the lawyer-speak language wasn’t easy to understand for the average person.

I worked with a CICA committee to clean up the bylaws document, simplify the language, and refresh out-of-date information with current policies.

    • Met with the CICA Bylaws Committee virtually to learn about the current bylaws and their goals for the refresh

    • Performed multiple rounds of edits, supplying the committee with tracked edits for approval or rejection and garnering feedback after each round

    • Met virtually with the committee several times to discuss the editing progress and additional changes they desired

    • Received final approval of the updates bylaws, finalized the document, and submitted both MS Word and PDF versions of the updated document

  • CICA members and Boards report that the refreshed bylaws are much easier to understand, and finding any specific information they are looking for is now a simple and clear process.

  • I’ve been working with Public Authority Services since 2014. In this time, I have worked on their website as it was rebuilt and modernized in 2021, and continued performing refreshes, quarterly reviews, and maintenance.

I have also worked on their newsletters, annual reports, flyers, communications, branding, turning PowerPoints into videos with voice overs, and so much more.

It is a cherished privilege to continue working with them!

    • Website layout design, branding compliance, and website maintenance

    • Branding and style guidelines

    • Newsletter project management and copy editing

    • Annual report project and design management, copy editing, and branding compliance

    • Print and digital media design

    • Graphic design

    • PowerPoint presentation creation, video conversion, and voiceover

  • Public Authority Services by Sourcewise has risen to the top of all Public Authorities in California in training and information accessibility, and serves as a top tier example for how these state-mandated nonprofit organizations serve the public with digestible outreach and communications.

A computer screen showing a flyer for 'CPS Without Borders' life saving skills training being created with Adobe InDesign
  • CPR Without Borders is a small mobile CPR and First Aid training business that trains both English and Spanish speaking nurses, teachers, caregivers, and others in life saving skills.

They contacted me to design flyers advertising upcoming classes, for several different audiences.

Flyers that appeal to nurses may not catch the attention of a family caregiver, so I have designed several different flyers for them over the years that change in design based on the intended audience.

    • Met virtually with the company’s owner to learn about the organization, their goals, and the different types of students they needed to advertise to

    • Without a branding guide, I used their website, logo, and information gathered from the owner to learn about their color-scheme, voice, and other brand elements

    • Created three English language flyer design drafts and presented them for feedback

    • Used feedback to adjust the flyer designs to fit the company’s vision

    • Presented revised designs and received approval to move forward

    • Translated the flyers into Spanish, adjusting the design as needed to accommodate for word count and spacing differences

    • Presented the Spanish versions for review and translation verification

    • Used this feedback to adjusted the Spanish language flyers

    • Presented the revised designs and received approval to finalize the designs

    • Sent the company the final package zip folder containing the images and font assets used in the designs, web-ready PDF flyers for sharing digitally and posting on their social media, the print-ready PDF to be sent to a commercial printer, and the InDesign files

  • Requests from organizations wanting CPR and First Aid Training has increased, and the web-ready flyer has been a successful referral tool for their clients to recommend this training to others.

CPR Without Borders has continued having me update the flyers with current information and design adjustments as new training schedules become available.
